Popular science often asks the question, Are we alone? Many believe that extraterrestrial beings leave another world, visit Earth, and even live among us. Is this true according to the Bible? If so, do these aliens give us assurance of our salvation from Earth's destruction?
In this lesson, we will consider the presence on earth of beings from another world. These extraterrestrials have been present among us, and involved with us, from the beginning of Earth’s history, to its coming end. Some of them are good and some of them are evil.
God created the world and made man, namely Adam the male, and Eve the female. He planted a garden in Eden for their home. An intruder entered the garden and enticed them to disobey God (Genesis 2&3).
So there was an alien with a non-human mind and body, the evil enemy of the human race, an alien in the very worst sense.
This Alien came to stay. Thousands of years later, John saw this vision: "So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him" (Revelation 12:9 NKJV).
Whilst that passage records a vision about the victory of the Christ child over Satan, it shows us that the devil and his angels (the demons) remained on earth after he was first manifest as the serpent of old in the garden of Eden. He was instrumental in the fall of man.
So the devil and his evil angels were consigned to the earth, the domain of man which they infested. These imposters however are restricted by God who sends his righteous angels to oppose the inimical ones, and drive them back into the darkness.
"And the angels who did not keep their proper domain, but left their own abode, He has reserved in everlasting chains under darkness for the judgment of the great day" (Jude 1:6 NKJV ).
"...God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into [Tartarus] and committed them to chains of gloomy darkness to be kept until the judgment..." (2Peter 2:4 BSB).
As we said, Satan did not leave the earth after the fall of Adam and Eve. Indeed, he was still here when Christ came. He spoke to Jesus, tempting him, but Jesus did not fall, leaving Satan angry and frustrated.(Matthew 4).
"Therefore, rejoice, O heavens and you who dwell in them! But woe to you, O earth and sea, for the devil has come down to you in great wrath, because he knows that his time is short!" (Revelation 12:12 ESV).
That's good news, and there is more. There are good angels whom God sends to earth as warriors to fight Satan and his angels when they try to foil God’s purpose.
Long ago, angels were helping Abraham and his descendants, as we see in the Bible stories recording their history.
For example, Daniel, in a rare encounter, saw Gabriel and spoke with him. Also, the great angelic prince Michael is mentioned (Daniel 9:20-23, 12:1).
There were angels at the tomb of Jesus when he rose from the dead (Matthew 28:1-8, John 20:11-13).
There were angels at Christ’s ascension who promised that Jesus would come again (Acts 1:10-11).
In the Bible, there are many mentions of an "angel of the LORD" helping God’s people (eg Acts 12:7).
In fact all Christians are touched and helped by angels when the going is rough. Angels are extraterrestrials who visit earth as "...ministering spirits sent forth to minister for those who will inherit salvation..." (Hebrews 1:14 NKJV).
This does not mean that they will be visible to us. They are heavenly beings. Their ministry is spiritual. It's like Elisha’s servant who could not see the chariots`of fire supporting Elisha, but they were real (2Kings 6:17).
Now let us come back to thinking about the evil angels that infest earth.
We are in the last days (Hebrews 1:1-4) which started with Jesus’s death, burial, resurrection, ascension, and accession to the throne of God.
We might have thought that Christ would destroy Satan when he sat on the throne in heaven, but he does not destroy Satan until the final day of the last days, the second coming.
The devil and his angels are still in exile on earth awaiting their judgment and everlasting destruction. They will not inhabit the new heavens and new earth (Matthew 25:41).
"Finally, be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you can make your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this world’s darkness, and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms" (Ephesians 6:10-12 NKJV).
The heavenly realms that Paul mentions are not in the heaven where Jesus is, but in the air here on earth. "...you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience..." (Ephesians 2:1-2 NKJV).
I encourage you to be aware of the extraterrestrial "aliens" we have thought about in this lesson.
