Facts About Moses
—A simple list

The Prophet Moses

  • At the time Moses was born, the Pharaoh of Egypt decreed that all Israelite male babies be killed. However, by God's providence baby Moses escaped death and was brought up in the Pharaoh's palace.
  • A brief account of the story of Moses is provided in Exodus 2. Another account is in Acts 7:17-42, part of the speech made by Stephen.
  • As a young man, Moses killed a cruel Egyptian task master. Moses had to flee and he settled in Midian and married Zipporah.
  • Later in life, God commissioned Moses to release his people from their enslavement. Moses confronted Pharaoh, and with ten plagues forced Pharaoh to let the people go free.
  • Moses took the Israelites across the Red Sea, parting the waters as the people made exodus from Egypt. After that, he led them through forty years of wandering the wilderness.
  • The wanderers in the wilderness camped for two years at Mount Sinai. There Moses was given the law to be observed in the promised land.
  • When Moses descended from Mount Sinai with the law, his face shone so brightly that the people could not look at him. So he had to veil his face when teaching the people (Exodus 34).
  • Moses was not entirely obedient to God. For example God threatened Moses because his son was uncircumcised (Exodus 4).
  • But Moses tried to keep to the exacting standards that God imposed on him (Exodus 17:1-7, Numbers 20:1-13).
  • Moses declared himself to be a type (or symbol) of Christ. He said that God would raise up for Israel a prophet like him (Acts 7:37).
  • Moses chose to suffer affliction rather than enjoy the passing pleasures of sin (Hebrews 11:25).
  • Moses esteemed the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasure in Egypt (Hebrews 11:26).
  • Moses looked to the invisible God for courage rather than fearing the wrath of the Pharaoh behind him (Hebrews 11:27).
  • Moses was very humble and took the place of a servant in God's household (Hebrews 3:2-6, Numbers 12:1-9).
  • The genealogy of Moses and his brother Aaron is recorded in Exodus 6. They were descendents of Levi.
  • Moses is one of the Bible’s authors. He wrote the first five books which contain the law of Moses.
