Facts About Creation
—A simple list

God’s Creative Work

Bible Teaches Creation

  • In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth and all that is in them (Genesis 1:1).
  • Of old God laid the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the work of his hands (Psalm 102:25).

The Means of Creation

  • God says, "I have made the earth and created man upon it. With my own hands I stretched out the heavens." (Isaiah 45:12).
  • God made the earth by his power. He has established the world by his wisdom (Jeremiah 10:12).
  • The LORD by his wisdom founded the earth. By understanding he established the heavens. By his knowledge the depths were divided and clouds drop down the dew (Proverbs 3:19-20).
  • All things exist and were created by the will of the Lord God (Revelation 4:11).
  • The worlds were created by the word of God (Hebrews 11:3).
  • The creation we see was made from what is not seen (Hebrews 11:3).

Creation as Evidence of God

  • Since creation, God’s eternal power and divinity are understood from the things he has made (Romans 1:20).
  • The heavens declare the glory of God and the sky displays his handiwork (Psalm 19:1).

The Days of Creation

  • God created the heavens and the earth in six days (Genesis 1).
  • DAY 1 The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep. The Spirit of God moved over the surface of the waters and God created light. He called the light Day, and the darkness Night (Genesis 1:2-5).
  • DAY 2 God made the sky and he called it Heaven. The sky separated the waters above from the waters below (Genesis 1:2-).
  • DAY 3 God made the dry land he called it Earth. To make the dry land appear, God gathered the waters under the heavens and called them Seas. God made the earth bring forth all kinds of herbs and trees, each bearing seed of its own kind (Genesis 1:9-13).
  • DAY 4 God set lights in the sky, the sun to rule the day, the moon to rule the night, and the stars also. These lights were for signs and seasons and to divide day from night. (Genesis 1:14-19).
  • DAY 5 God made the waters abound with all kinds of living creatures. He made all kinds of birds to fly across the sky. God commanded the creatures of the waters to be fruitful and multiply after their kind. He commanded the birds of the sky to multiply on the earth, each as to its kind. (Genesis 1:20-23).
  • DAY 6 God made the earth bring forth all kinds of animals and creeping things to live on it. Then as his last act of creation, God made man in his image, both male and female, to have charge over the land, sea, and sky and all their creatures. God commanded man to be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth. God allowed man, and the creatures of the land, to use the plants and fruit trees for food. (Genesis 1:24-30).
  • DAY 7 God looked at all he had created and made. He saw that it was good. Then he rested from his work. So he blessed the seventh day and made it holy. (Genesis 1:31 to 2:3).

Christ in Creation

  • All things were made through the Word (Jesus Christ) and nothing God made was made without him (John 1:1-4).
  • All things were created through Christ and for him, and he is before all things created (Colossians 1:13-18).

Observations

  • On each day of creation “God said... and it was so... God saw... and it was good” (Genesis 1:3-4 etc). On the sixth day this happened twice, after creating the land creatures (Genesis 1:24-25), then again after creating man and woman (Genesis 1:26,31).
  • The Genesis account has the following separations or divisions. (1) Light divided night from day; (2) sky divided waters above from waters below; (3) waters below separated into seas for dry land to appear; (4) waters above (possibly) separated into clouds for the lights in the sky to appear (Genesis 1:4,7,9,14).
  • God made five distinct forms of life: (1) plants of the earth; (2) creatures of the waters; (3) birds of the air; (4) creatures of the land; (5) Human beings (Genesis 1:11,20,24,26). The first four forms were made in various kinds. The fifth form, human beings, were made as one kind only, in the image of God.
  • In making man in his image, God did not create two independent beings. From the dust of the ground God created one living being, Adam. Then he took a rib from Adam, and made his companion Eve. So the two, male and female, were both of one flesh and equally in God’s image (Genesis 2:7,18,21-24).
  • For this is what the LORD says, who created the heavens, who is God, who fashioned and made the earth, who established it —he did not create it to be empty (Isaiah 45:18).

A New Heavens and Earth

  • God says, "Behold! I will create new heavens and a new earth, and the former will not be remembered or come to mind. But be glad and rejoice forever in my creation" (Isaiah 65:17).
  • The world of old perished. It was flooded with water. The present heavens and earth will also be destroyed. They are reserved for fire on the day of Judgment (2Peter 3:5-7).
  • Peter also says, "But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be burned up." (2Peter 3:10).
  • Peter’s prophecy continues, "The heavens will be dissolved by fire and the elements will melt with intense heat. Nevertheless we look for a new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells" (2Peter 3:12-13).
  • John had a vision of the same. "Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was gone." (Revelation 21:1).
  • Paul says, "The creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God." (Romans 8:21).
