The General Resurrection

• At one hour, all the dead, both righteous and sinners, will be raised. Jesus said, "Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice and come forth —those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation" (John 5:28-29 NKJV).
• In the resurrection, there will be no more marriage. "When the dead rise, they will neither marry nor be given in marriage. Instead, they will be like the angels in heaven" (Mark 12:25 NKJV).
• Where death destroys the natural body, the resurrection brings it to life as a spiritual body. Paul says, "It is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body" (1Corinthians 15:44 NKJV).
• The purpose of the resurrection is that mortality may be swallowed up by life. Paul says, "For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed with our habitation which is from heaven, 3 if indeed, having been clothed, we shall not be found naked. 4 For we who are in this tent groan, being burdened, not because we want to be unclothed, but further clothed, that mortality may be swallowed up by life." (2Corinthians 5:1-5 NKJV).
• The indwelling of the Holy Spirit enables and guarantees our resurrection to life. "But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you." (Romans 8:11 NKJV).
• Our mortal bodies will be changed into glorious bodies like that of Jesus, "who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body, by the power that enables him even to subject all things to himself." (Philippians 3:21 ESV).
• The power to bring about the resurrection of the dead is vested in Jesus Christ. Jesus said to Martha, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. 26 And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die" (John 11:25-26 NKJV).
• The resurrection has been the subject of false teaching. Paul mentions those "who have deviated from the truth. They say that the resurrection has already occurred, and they undermine the faith of some" (2Timothy 2:18 BSB).
• There were even teachers who denied that there was any resurrection at all. "The Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to Jesus and questioned him..." (Mark 12:18). "For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, nor an angel, nor a spirit, but the Pharisees acknowledge them all." (Acts 23:8 NASB).
• The resurrection is predicted in the book of Daniel: "And many who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake, some to everlasting life, but others to shame and everlasting contempt. 3 Then the wise will shine like the brightness of the heavens,b and those who lead many to righteousness will shine like the stars forever and ever" (Daniel 12:2-3 BSB).
• Ezekiel’s vision of dry bones forsees the resurrection as a promise to the spiritual Israel, the Lord’s church. The bones represent the house of Israel in devastation and defeat. But God says, "I will open your graves and bring you up from them. I will put My Spirit in you and you will live. I will settle you in your own land" (Ezekiel 37:11-14 NIV).
• The promise of resurrection is backed up by the resurrection of Christ "And God raised the Lord and will also raise us up by his power" (1 Corinthians 6:14 ESV).
