Graham Story

Page 14. On 18th January 1861, when Sarah Ann was 5 years and 5 months old and Sarah and William were 44, John George Graham was born. William was working as a labourer and the family was living at Ross Street, Toorak where the Grahams would still be living 80 years later.

I know very little about my gt aunt Sarah. It seems she lived at home her whole life at 13 Ross Street, Toorak. She watched her younger brother marry and raise a family just down the road at number 29. I suppose she cared for her elderly parents as so many single women did at that time. No occupation is recorded on her death certificate.

Her brother John George became a blacksmith and was also at home with his parents until, at the age of 36, he married. John played the cornet in a band.

William Graham died on 20 August 1888 in the house at 13 Ross Street. He was 74 years old. Dr Steel, probably the family doctor, wrote "old age, natural causes" as the cause of death. I suppose 74 was a good age to live to in those days. Although he worked as a labourer and brickmaker in Australia, the occupation recorded on his death certificate is once again "Currier". He died three days short of his 39th wedding anniversary without seeing either of his own children married although, they were 32 and 27 respectively. On his death certificate, William’s father is shown as "not known", a very common practice in the days when a convict in the family was a cause of shame. I wonder what happened to Matthias and whether he ever met up with his son William in Australia? This is the subject of further research. It is possible he never told his children the secret of his father’s past.

William’s grave is in the St Kilda Cemetery in Melbourne. The gravestone reads:

Somewhere during these years the family became members of the church of Christ. William was buried in the church of England section of the St Kilda cemetery (Section C, Grave number 732.) but in later years the family burials were in the church of Christ section of the Pioneer Cemetery at Cheltenham.
