Outline of Philippians—For an expository study
This page provides both an outline and an expository study of Paul's letter to the Philippians.
This outline makes two excellent sermons so long as you keep them moving right along.
1. How Paul felt about the Philippians
Philippians 1:1-8
Wishing them grace and peace (Philippians 1:1-2).
Thankful for their fellowship (Philippians 1:3-5).
Confident of their development (Philippians 1:6).
Lonely for their company (Philippians 1:7-8).
2. Paul’s prayers for the Philippians
Philippians 1:9-11
An abounding well-founded love (Philippians 1:9).
A pure and excellent life (Philippians 1:10).
Fruitfulness to God's glory (Philippians 1:11).
3. How Paul felt about imprisonment
Philippians 1:12-20
An opportunity to preach (Philippians 1:12-13).
Gave courage to his companions (Philippians 1:14).
Motivated his opponents to preach (Philippians 1:15-18).
Helped his own salvation (Philippians 1:19).
4. How Paul felt about death.
Philippians 1:20-26
It would glorify Christ (Philippians 1:20).
It would be to his benefit (Philippians 1:21,23).
It would be a loss to the Philippians (Philippians 1:22).
It was not imminent (Philippians 1:24-26).
5. Exhortations.
Philippians 1:27 to 2:5
Acts like Christians (Philippians 1:27).
Suffer with courage (Philippians 1:27-30).
Be united (Philippians 2:1-2).
Be unselfish (Philippians 2:3-4).
6. Facts about Jesus.
Philippians 2:5-11
Shared "equality with God" (Philippians 2:5-6).
Became a human being (Philippians 2:7-8).
Obeyed God's will unto death (Philippians 2:8).
Was raised and exalted (Philippians 2:9-11).
7. More exhortations.
Philippians 2:12-18
Keep on obeying (Philippians 2:12-13).
Don't grumble (Philippians 2:14).
Let your light shine (Philippians 2:15).
Hold fast the word (Philippians 2:16).
Make Paul's work worthwhile (Philippians 2:16-17).
Rejoice with him (Philippians 2:18).
8. Paul's two companions.
Philippians 2:19-30
Timothy, proved trustworthy, like a son (Philippians 2:19-23).
Epaphroditus, risked life, deserved esteem (Philippians 2:24-30).
9. A warning.
Philippians 3:1-3
Let the word be your safeguard (Philippians 3:1).
Beware of false religion (Philippians 3:2).
"Put no confidence in the flesh" (Philippians 3:3).
10. Paul’s past and future.
Philippians 3:4-141
Had all Judaism could offer (Philippians 3:4-6).
Threw it all away for Christ (Philippians 3:7-8).
Now find righteousness in Christ (Philippians 3:9).
Now striving now for heavenly goals (Philippians 3:10-14).
11. More exhortations.
Philippians 3:15 to 4:1-9
Have the right attitude (Philippians 3:15).
Line up to the right standard (Philippians 3:16).
Follow the good examples (Philippians 3:17).
Weep for the enemies of the cross (Philippians 3:18-19).
As citizens of Heaven, wait eagerly (Philippians 3:20-21).
"Stand firm in the Lord" (Philippians 4:1).
Harmony and helpfulness (Philippians 4:2-3).
Joy and forbearance (Philippians 4:4-5).
Prayer and peace (Philippians 4:6-7).
Think right, act right (Philippians 4:8-9).
12. Gratitude for gifts.
Philippians 4:10-23
Glad they found opportunity to help (Philippians 4:10).
Paul's contentment in all circumstances (Philippians 4:11-12).
Paul's complete reliance upon Christ (Philippians 4:13).
The Phillipians commended (Philippians 4:14-16).
Gratitude for the gifts (Philippians 4:17-18).
God will bless them in return (Philippians 4:19).
Doxology, greetings, benediction (Philippians 4:20-23).
